Rank’s Mercantile is the oldest continually operated store in Montana, established in 1863 when gold was discovered up Alder Gulch near Virginia City. Murder and robbery led honest men to taking the law into their own hands when Paris Pfouts, one of the Vigilantes, established Rank’s. The infamous Jack Slade was arrested there and hanged from a corral out back. Rank’s Mercantile is an old time general store offering wild-west period clothing, groceries, patent medicines, jewelry, gifts and notions. They specialize in books on women of the west, fur trappers, Native Americans, ghost towns and Montana’s rich history.
